CREATING A PROFESSIONAL PORTFOLIO

A well-planned professional portfolio reflects creative and effective teaching. This workshop provides advice on the purpose, content, and construction of a teaching (professional) portfolio and gives tips for writing a meaningful, effective teaching philosophy. This workshop is useful for graduate students and new faculty.

Learning objectives are a powerful tool to guide teaching and learning. They are also a challenge to create. This workshop will introduce the basics of writing learning objectives and show how to use them as a starting point for curriculum design. Please bring a lecture or classroom session (on paper, on a computer or in your mind) to use as a springboard for developing course materials.
As an award-winning lecturer in the Department of Anatomy, Darren Hoffmann, PhD, offers graduate students and post-docs a series of workshops on curriculum and course design. He has helped develop a dynamic 3-D dissectible human cadaver model and incorporates cyber-anatomy to help enhance the learning of health science students.

College teaching is not a level playing field; research indicates that gender, race, age, and other markers of difference have significant impacts on student responses to college teachers. This workshop will focus on gender as a key factor in college teaching, discussing the challenges that arise for female faculty members and offering effective strategies for achieving success by recognizing and overcoming gender bias, in the classroom setting.
Meenakshi Gigi Durham is a professor of journalism and collegiate scholar, with a joint appointment in the Department of Gender, Women's and Sexuality Studies. Her scholarship and teaching focus on media and the politics of the body, with an emphasis on gender, sexuality, race, and youth cultures.

Teaching during graduate school can help you land an academic job and thrive once you're in it. This workshop will present strategies to help graduate students prepare for and transition into a career in academia. We will address a range of issues, including how to develop interdisciplinary collaborations, when to take reasonable risks, and how to balance--or combine—teaching, scholarship, and service.
Since earning a PhD in English at Iowa in 2011, Bridget A. Draxler has been an assistant professor of English at Monmouth College, in Monmouth, Illinois. As a graduate student, she served as Iowa's first HASTAC Scholar, and was selected as a 2012 NEH Fellow. Her scholarship focuses on 18th-century English literature and culture, civic engagement, and the digital humanities.

Learning in depth and for the long-term happens when students are challenged to dig deep and become actively involved with their own learning process. This workshop will help instructors understand how to design inquiry-guided activities that challenge students to wrestle with course material.
In addition to teaching at all levels, Associate Professor of Chemistry Renee Cole actively engages in chemical education research. She serves on the national steering committee for the POGIL (Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning) project.

Physical or cognitive disabilities, language limitations or environmental factors can create challenges for students trying to access instructional materials. This workshop will help instructors understand potential barriers and how to lessen them when planning courses, selecting and creating instructional materials, and conducting a class.
Mark Hale is the IT Accessibility Coordinator in the Office of the Chief Information Officer.
SAVE THE DATE
The University of Iowa and seven Iowa communities are partnering in a project to remember and learn from the impact of flooding on the state. Culminating with a series of cultural events and community-based conversations in May and June 2013, Living with Floods will examine past floods and explore ideas about how to manage those of the future.
